Working the design angle

August 27th, 2008 by cha

I watch a lot of design related reality tv. I have noticed that a lot of these shows feature tv personalities. People who are great designers are not natural performers. I think that some of these so called designers are not really designers. They are just working the design angle. It seems like they are more performer then designer. I think that design involving marketing and selling. Like everything in life, you need to be able to sell yourself and your design. If you want to be successful and make a lot of money, you need to have these skills. I was wondering if a designer who has no marketing skill can make a lot of money. They probably can’t because they will always be working under someone. The famous designers are not famous because they have great designs. They are famous because they were great at marketing. If you lack one skill, it’s probably a good idea to team up with someone who is good with that skill. I think that i am not that good at marketing. I need to find someone who i can partner up with. I need a marketing partner. I think that we could set up a pretty good company if we work hard and well together. I’ll do the design and he or she will do the marketing. Who knows, maybe we will make a lot of money and become rich and famous.

calculator design

August 4th, 2008 by cha

I had to pay the bills today. Usually, the beginning and the end of the month is hectic for most people. That’s because it’s bill time. When you get your bills set up for payment, you have to add and subtract. I have a lot of different types of calculators. All of them are pretty darn ugly. I was wondering why people don’t design cool calculators. But then i started thinking about prices. I asked myself if i would be willing to pay designer prices for a calculator. I wouldn’t. I know that i am a designer and should own cool stuff, but having a fancy looking calculator is a waste of money. You can use a 2 dollar calculator and it’s the same as using a $100 calculator.

The design field is filled with unnecessary items. We create things that are not needed. We create things that look cool. We try to create art but most of the time, it’s all about marketing and branding. I guess i am a bit cranky cause i just got finished paying the bills. I should be talking about the beauty of design. I’ll save that for non bill days.

Watch design

July 30th, 2008 by cha

I love a lot of thing, but i must admit that i am a sucker for watches. I like expensive ones of course. Something very sexy about an automatic watch. I love the detail and i love the design. Of course i have to mention rolex. When i was a young gal, i didn’t like my father’s rolex. It looked like it was for old people. Maybe i am getting older but i really like the look of a nice rolex timepiece. If you want to read learn more about watches, read the watch guide.

Other watches i want to note are Chanel watches. These ceramic watches are pure heaven. They feel nice on your wrist and the white one goes great with my jeans. It matches my ibook too.

Price is really high for these premium watches. But, compared to other things, the price isn’t all that bad. For example, a 3 thousand designer bag won’t retain it value. After a couple of years, it’ll go out of fashion. You wouldn’t be able to sell it on Ebay for that much. But if you have a rolex, you could sell it on ebay for at least 50% of the original purchase price. Not bad.

google updates pr

July 28th, 2008 by cha

Google updated the PR that is displayed on the toolbar. A lot of people think that this is the real pagerank. It isn’t. Real pagerank is always changing. But the toolbar pr updates every few months. I expected the PR for designbycha to stay the same, but it got lowered. Now my blog is a PR1. I am disappointed by this, but not that much. I know how shaky PR is and i don’t let things like that bring me down.

I’m still new to blogging and i’m glad that i have a few visitors every day. I’m also glad that this blog helps me make lunch money for me. In the blogging world, pagerank updates are a big deal. It’s because people who make money online need PR to help them make a living. Did your pr increase or decrease?

Print Design

July 16th, 2008 by cha

If you look around, you will notice a lot of design works. Every printed magazine has a staff of designers who dictated the layout and spacing. The colors and logos were all designed by someone. Music album covers and DVD covers were all designed by the marketing or advertising company. Design is everywhere but you it most in print. The extention of print design can be done via the web. A lot of web design is done on photoshop and illustrator. These programs are the industry standard. So if you are good with print design, you can probably create some nice web design.

Don’t be intimidated by now knowing much about the web. Whenever you start a new job, you have to go thru a learning phase. With the web, it’s not different. You have to start somewhere. If you know photoshop and illustrator, then you really shouldn’t be that concerned. The coding and programming can either be learned later, or never learned. It can be a seperate process. Most likely, you will pick up a little here and there.

Design is visual

July 15th, 2008 by cha

My blog is a design blog. So, text is great for readers and search engines, but i need to post up pictures. I mentioned that i’ve been busy with a design project, but i really should take the extra few mins in my blogging day to post up some pictures. Visual elements are what designs are all about. If you propose a project to a new client without an image, then you have no deal. When you go in for a job interview with just a text resume, you won’t get hired. If you run a design blog without images, then you don’t really have a design blog.

No matter how busy i am with work, i will try to post a picture up on my blog. This is something that defines my design blog. It’s also something that will help this blog in the search engines.

Everything is about design

July 9th, 2008 by cha

beach at sunsetWe grow up to think that we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. We are supposed to look inside to judge it’s true character. But, the truth of the matter is that we constantly judge things by it’s appearance. My field of study and work is all about the exterior. It’s about how things look. Design is everywhere. It’s in the health and beauty sector. It’s in the electronic sector. It’s even in the foods sector. We don’t like eating food that look nasty.

Even if you don’t focus on design, it’s a part of your life. The pair of jeans that you buy caught your attention because of design. Maybe the price tag or sale price did it, but you bought it cause it was at least pretty in your eyes.

It may seem like it’s shallow to judge things by it’s exterior, but it really isn’t. Appreciating beauty or design doesn’t make you shallow. It means that you have taste. It means that you have an opinion. It’s human nature to want things beautiful. The natural world is filled with designed beauty.

Website design photography

July 2nd, 2008 by cha

double whammyA lot of bloggers are setting up photo blogs. This seems to be the current trend. I like to dabble in photography, but sometimes it’s hard to lug the big camera around. I want to take a lot of photos but i don’t carry the tripod and different lenses all the time. I visited a site called double-whammy dot com. It is a beautifully design photo site. I was inspired by the design of the website. It was so simple yet so cool. I think i will start my own portfolio site and try to model it after this site.

The best type of photography sites are the ones designed to showcase the photo images. If your site’s design is too flashy, then the content could get lost in the shuffle. I’ve always been a minimalist so i tend to be biased with art that is too colorful. If you get a chance, visit double-whammy dot com. You’ll be inspired by the simplistic beauty of this site.

Map design

July 2nd, 2008 by cha

map designI’m a big map nut. I love and appreciate the beauty of cartography. There was a site that i found to be inspiring. Cartifact dot com is a site that builds custom maps for individuals and businesses. I did some research on the company. The company is based in Los Angeles and they have been in business for many years. They do some major project with the city of LA. I was thinking that running your own home based company could be a cool idea too. If you have skill in photoshop or illustrator, then you could probably set up your own small business. You could put up a website and start with that. This type of business would be perfect for work at home moms. It would be good for design students as well.

I like my job, but i don’t want to spend the rest of my life working for somebody. I want to have more creative freedom and i want to make a little more money. The only way that i can see this happening is if i open up my own business. Business doesn’t have to be a brick and mortar establishment. The internet allows people to work from the comfort of their own home. Consultants and design professionals do a lot of freelance work. I’ve worked on a few and really liked how it turned out.

Whether you interest lies with maps or product design, you could think about starting your own design company. As long as you can create something that people want, you can run a successful business. This post started as a post about map design, but it quickly turned into an inspirational post.

Where to find tutorials

June 23rd, 2008 by cha

tutorialsSo you want to get into design? You can start by buying a lot of books that you won’t read, or you can test out the waters by finding free sources of information online. The internet is a great thing indeed. There is a lot of garbage to filter out, but if you do a few searches, you will find what you are looking for. I wanted to talk about the different types of tutorials that you can find online. There are hundreds of design tutorial sites, but i will only focus on the few that i actually visit.

Whether you’re looking for photoshop tutorials or autocad tutorials, you can find them for free online. A good place to start is tutorialized.com. They have a wide selection of different type of web tutorials. If you are a visual learner, you could try doing a few searches on youtube for video tutorials. Good-tutorials is also a good place for web designers to seek out some knowledge.

If anything, you can always do a google search for tutorials. Just search with “blank tutorials” and i’m sure that you will find something on the first page. You can also try the source of the program you are trying to learn. Check out their website. They should have a lot of tutorials on their site that can guide you through the learning process.
